Day 7 - Longest straightest road to Eucla

Nice to see you guys, how have you been? Its been awhile, did you have a good sleep? Did you like your little comforts like the evening news, the weekends rap up in sport or monday night footy?

Its time to hear about day 7, what a day it was....

We headed out of the rest area at about 7:00am to a foggy road and the prospect of hitting a Camel, a Emu or a Kangaroo, on the next 146.6k road (which is in fact the straightest road in australia, by the way I agree its straight and "yes" it is boring). But the Nullabor is a wonderful place which is supposed to mean a "treeless plain" but as some of the photos suggest it isn't treeless, maybe they mean specific species of tree like Rutaceae but who is to know...

Also all those little horror stories of animals on the road and all over the place isn't really true because we were about half the Nullabor and we haven't seen a single animal. (the only things we keep seeing are either bugs or grey nomads) and they are both equally annoying...

After stopping at Cuiguna roadhouse to ask about the track to Baxter cliffs (BECAUSE AS YOU KNOW THE TRACK WE TRAVELLED ON YESTERDAY WAS SHITHOUSE WE BOTH WANTED TO BE SURE ABOUT THIS ONE)... as the guy informed us that it was a 3.5hr drive and it would decrease the value of the Nav because the track was overgrown and extremely rough... so we both looked at each other and said, "ok lets get a cuppa, think about it and.....Nah to much hard work, we will check out the bird observatory out at Cocklebiddy instead!")...

So off we headed about 60k down the road to ask yet another yolkel about the tracks, which he informed us that it was an easy 10k of unsealed road which led to about 25k of 4x4 only road but the Nav would shit it in so we headed 16k east then hopped off the Erye hwy and headed south. this was a great little dirt road, easy to navigate and not to taxing on the car, we headed up the hill to a lookout where these photos were taken and called up the bird observatory on the UHF to ask what the road was in-fact like. but after taking some great photos we both thought that it was good enough and we could carry on east which we did in due course.

Off to Eucla the town of some with a few little historical sites like the Old Telegraph Station, a few plaques for fishermen and a cross...

Now it's time to have a couple of beverages and listen to the doctor on triple J talk about fat rabbits and watch the sun go down, for one of the first times in a long time, over land instead of the indian ocean...

PS we have now travelled over 3000kms and we are in-fact over halfway home...

From a Hill in Eucla - goodnight and enjoy tomorrow, I know we will...we will be in South Australia
